We believe in reuse and salvage: part 1

When reinventing a  floor plan for a historical  home. Salvage is important.

In this case salvage  works both ways.  We had designed  a new carport for this stately home in the country. Before we altered the side elevation we studied record drawings and found that it been modified from its original intended design.  The motivation to reinvent the entry was to make the home more accessible to the occupants of a multifloor home and eliminate the awkward and difficult to maintain exterior steps.

Once the vision for the carport was established, I stumbled on the perfect columns at Reuse Action  (shout out to reuse) the columns likely came from Gothic City so their pedigree is unknown. They provide a counterpoint to the existing historic columns on the front porch, as they are different enough  being non fluted but yet in the same vocabulary of classical language revival styles and they had the correct proportion.  When designing an extension to a historical dwelling it is important to differentiate between new and existing historic architectural features and this home has a significant front porch

The yard at Reuse is full of treasures and the embodied energy in those historical artifacts seeps into the  building. This column was well suited to accept the steel columns and talented contractors devised a clever method to install them.
