Elma Dream

We designed a truly ” green” high performance home.  The timbers are from a reclaimed barn and in the process of replaning them into required profiles.. the exterior layer was re-millled into flooring and paneling such that none of the old growth wood went to waste.  Much of the interior doors, millwork, hardware, flooring & cabinetry is reclaimed from a convent that was being decommisioned.   The Owners made the decision to use locally sourced products from the Boston Valley Terra Cotta roof which should outlast all of us to the onondoga limestone exterior, all sourced within 500′ of the site.  On the interior.. natural organic products and finishes were utilized to avoid any off- gasing and assure the warmth and beauty of wood and the comfort of a healthy home, cork is featured as well as linseed based marmoleum and soapstone.  Paul Thomas a skilled english carpenter is responsible for much of the millwork and the stair set that winds up to a tower offering a ribbon of ventilating windows to allow hot air to vent out and cool the home naturally.
A 2 sided masonry wood stove stands at the center of the floor plan to offer the best thermal performance, it offers a bread oven above the firebox w/ a soaring high ceilinged space on one side and a cozy space scaled for 2 on the opposite side.   A large eyebrow window illuminates a loft overlook. The decision to pursue the best indoor air quality allowed us to create a delightful covered walkway from the detached garage to a curved mudroom space for everyday transitions. The site features an old school styled new “bank” barn where solar panels  generate electricity for the home and store farm equipment and animals.  The combination of outbuildings creates the sense of an old homestead that has been there for many years and will continue to serve generations for years to come.

Warm tones of cherry wood paneling and windows create a welcoming entry.
