Lewiston River House
In this home overlooking the Niagara River, much of the original character had been lost to white paint and drywall ceilings. The Owner longed for the homes he cherished in childhood in Miskoka country. Time was taken to consider how the existing spaces could be modified to suit the needs of the Owner so that only a very small addition was required.
Along the design way… artifacts, antiques and salvage were incorporated and carefully accommodated in the design.
Warm original wood beams and ceilings were unearthed. A simple galley butternut kitchen gained a cozy sunset banquette.
Dry ice was used to remove paint from the fireplace which dominated the main living space and we grew to love the chippy effect. 2 catwalks were consolidated to offer more light and view of the river and a wonky ad hoc entrance was eliminated so a proper entry could be created. Simple moves created gracious indoor spaces and the preservation of veranda details such as open rough sawn rafters and sky blue ceilings and sapele decking will allow a lifetime of lazy days by the rivers edge.
